Never do what I did

As this is a fitness blog, fitness news first.

Canberra Roller Derby League has cancelled their try-outs until November. So devastated. My buddy Shane says I still have to work out like they're on July 2, but I must confess a little of my resolve has drifted....

On another non fitness related thing. Today has been a big day for me financially, and I want to write this post in case there are any youngens out there thinking about getting a credit card.

In my early twenties I earned a shit load of money from my play The Vegemite Tales, which I proceeded to squander on wine and women (well, not quite wine and women - food and travel would be a more appropriate way of explaining it away).

The play went on throughout my twenties so that by the end of it, I would live on the money, wrack up a heap of credit cards and pay the credit cards back with the next year's royalties.

Then one day there was no "next year". The play closed and wasn't back on again.

Which left me with a huge tax bill from the year before and a heap of credit cards. For the last four years, I've been trying to pay the credit cards off as well as manage a mortgage and rent. Tough. I just haven't been able to get ahead.

Every month or so, it really depresses me. I had a relationship break up last year and all I wanted to do was travel, and couldn't because I was crippled with debt. I've been invited to NYC to do a few months in my dream job and can't because I'm crippled with debt. I had a ticket booked to the US last year and didn't end up going because I could afford it.

DON'T EVER GET A CREDIT CARD.

Today, somehow, I managed to secure a consolidation loan to pay them off. Finally.

And I feel so free! At the same time, I set up a savings account for my travel fund.

The world feels great again. Still, if I'd never been in credit card debt, I'd be hanging in New York or London now without a care in the world.
