So I'm yet to get to the stage where I LOVE the running while I'm doing it, but jeeeeeez I love my own guts once I've finished!
Last night we had a session with a Sports Psychologist Liz Grylls (who looks exactly like Laura Linney) as part of the preparation for the ABC Half Marathon.
We got to ask questions and the biggest thing I wanted to find out is : how do you get your mojo back post injury when you've lost a sheisen load of the fitness you'd spent months building up?
She suggested a find a new program to tick off. Which I did. I've been doing my beloved Guardian program, but to be honest I feel like a bit of a baby doing it with all the run/walk stuff. I feel a little as though I'm letting myself down even though it exhausts me.
So I went to our old mate Hal Higdon's website and found this one! Sure, it's a 0-5kms, but it's all running! No real run/walks (well there are some, but they're not serious days).
I did the 2.5kms it demands today and although I felt like an extra 20 metres would have finished me, I finished it. As I was walking/limping/nearly crawling back to my home I got that old feeling - you know the one that says "I could not have done anything better for myself than the way I spent that last half hour! Boom!"
ps. NEWS JUST IN: My sister Supsy did the British 10km over the weekend, in spite of a broken toe not being completely mended! She's crazy, but awesome. Here she is post race already making her T-shirt look cool...

Wow, that is terrific that you had that opportunity! Sounds like some good advice too. I really like Hal's plans. I've used it quite successfully for many different distances.
I am so glad that you are back at it!!!!!
And by the way...plans are in the works for my trip to Australia. Hope to finalize details in August or so. Will keep you in the loop so hopefully we can meet up!
ooooh, i wanna plan a trip to Australia one day too :) So glad you're running, and enjoy the aftermath. Great question to ask!! Very cool that you found a plan that'll work for ya, here's to hoping we both get on with no further injuries!!
what a good idea! hope the new plan gives you the extra spark you need :) glad your feet are holding up and allowing you to run.
congrats to your sister! running on a broken toe - wow!
bask in your post run glory girl. you deserve too.
congrats to your sister. love the shirt!
Congratulations to your sister! You'll get there too, I promise!
I can't wait for you to get to the point where you are loving to run while you are running. YOU WILL GET THERE my friend, you will!! Congrats to your tough sister, WOW!!
I used to be the same way-- I HATED running-- but give yourself two solid weeks and you won't be able to live without it!
Tell your sis congrats!!! That is awesome for her!
Cool, a new program!! Although I have to say, I also do some walking (I'm not following a program, I just walk when I feel I need it), and I think I have that to thank for never really hurting after my runs! I'm looking forward to seeing how you'll find the new program! And congrats to your sis :)
A new program will mix it up and having new distances will challenge you to focus on a new set of times and goals. I'm glad you are back!!!
Did you print out a copy of the plan? If not, do so, and cross out each run after you've done it with a great big X. It's the best feeling, and you can look back and know how much hard work you've done. (just my suggestion) Keep up the good work!
Hmm. Liz Grylls. Any relation to Bear? He's plastered all over the television here in the States with his Man vs. Wild series!
I *love* the Higdon plans. I think they are a great balance of preparation vs physical exertion. Right now I'm doing the Pftizinger Marathon plan, and I constantly feel like I'm right on the edge of breaking. I never felt that way when doing a Higdon plan!
